    THE STORY: Historically, Grattamacco is considered to be a very important estate of Bolgheri area, not only because it is amongst the oldest here, but also because of its early influence on general development and winemaking style of entire area.
    The estate was founded in the end of 70s by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, an urban refugee from Bergamo, ready to follow market’s new interest in a new cradle of Cabernet Sauvignon in Italy. The first vintage produced was 1978 as a result of blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and Merlot.
    Estate is situated in a stunning location - on a hill overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea at a height of 100 metres, between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. The farm covers an area of 34 hectares with almost half covered by vineyards and olive groves, the rest of the hill-side includes an extensive stretch of Mediterranean scrub. The vineyards, subdivided in 7 micro zones and featuring 3 principle types of soil, are situated in a natural cradle where protected from strong winds of the sea.
    The area is particularly good for the production of high quality red wines as it enjoys a dry climate with consistent thermal excursions at the end of summer. The vines are traditional Bordeaux varieties together with local Sangiovese. Whites are presented by Vermentino, which is vinified with a partial use of barrique for Grattamacco Bianco.
    Cultivation follows certified organic criteria: balanced production, natural fertilization, no use of weed killers or insecticides.

    Cellar
    The cellar is also organized in accordance with traditional criteria and with respect for the raw materials: minimum use of pumps by taking advantage of the natural differences in levels; the use of wood for vinification as well as ageing. Ambient temperature and natural humidity during ageing are applied.

    Since 2002 Grattamacco estate is under control of Collemassari Spa, whose Swiss based owner and chief executive Claudio Tipa can feel safe about his Bolgheri investment. Company also controls Montecucco based estate Castello ColleMassari.
